Tarmac is short for Tarmacadam This is a material primarily used for surfacing and resurfacing public roads, driveways and footpaths. Tarmac itself is made from crushed stone in varying sizes which is mixed with bitumen to make tarmacadam. Different size stone give you different strengths and different cosmetic finishes. It generally comes in three colours; black, red and green, black being the most popular. You can add other features to tarmac to enhance its look on a driveway or path. You can fit different pavers to give great looking borders to your driveway or path. You can also seed the top of the tarmac with different decorative gravels to create a unique look to your property.
You start by digging out 250mm of ground and laying 40mm of hardcore, compacting it thoroughly. Then you will need to lay kerbs around any edge making sure that these are well concreted in. You can then start laying your base tarmac. This is made with larger stones to give more strength and is laid 75mm deep. Once this has been rolled and has cooled down you can then put on your topping of 35mm of fine tarmac, which when rolled, will give you a nice tight surface.
